I used to live near the Pentagon, and that's about as high-security as it gets. And it's right in the middle of Arlington. You can walk to stuff, and/or take the Metro.

I agree with the concept of having jobs in a concentrated area, because it makes public transportation viable. And instead of sprawl, you can keep rural land rural. Wouldn't it be better to grow our crops a lot closer to home? Trucking most of our food thousands of miles is silly, especially with the variability of fuel costs, and food safety concerns.
What I can't stand is that local governments devote huge areas to office parks, then limit how tall the buildings can be. It would be a lot better to limit the acreage, and force developers to build UP. I realize some manufacturing and warehousing concerns need lots of space on one floor, but look at most tennants of suburban office parks. They are office workers in a sea of cubicles, all on one or two levels. I think this is grossly inefficient.

Anonymous has a good idea, we should focus development along existing rail lines. Arlington did this on the Orange Line. It's an economic miracle.

Actually I have a little inside knowledge to add to the new data center. It isn't meant to move a large number of employees from the current Woodlawn campus. Instead it is meant to be a 'dark' facility were the computers primarily live.

That being said I fully agree that SSA (and CMS) should focus development if not in the city center at least along existing rail transit lines.
