COLD TYPE: A Baltimore Media Blog
by JOAN JACOBSON
The Baltimore Sun ’s “Letters to the Editor” unexpectedly died April 30 after a robust life of more than a century, one more casualty of the stunning deterioration of American newspapers. The feature was a victim of the ever-expanding murder plot to kill off the Fourth Estate and the English language simultaneously.

According to local law enforcement officials, the ‘Letters’ death may have been expedited by several rubes and boobs masquerading as newspaper men and women.

Letters that were once a bellwether of politics and public opinion (always fascinating to read anti-war letters from conservative Harford County or the Eastern Shore), and a simple outlet for well-known local figures to briefly rant, have been replaced by anonymous blogs and tweets, where citizens can hide their half-thoughts behind monikers like “BaltimoreGal’ ‘scorpiowonder’ and “IKnowCalRipken.”

The old letters were carefully vetted by an editor (fired last week, like 60 others at the disappearing Sun) who spoke with each letter writer before publication, confirming the letter’s authenticity and often making suggestions to improve a letter’s cogency.

(I admit that the now unemployed editor made my last letter more coherent after I grudgingly made a change he suggested.)

Now, the job is much easier. Anonymity no longer requires scrutiny – or even proper capitalization or punctuation. And whoever is left at the Sun doesn’t feel obliged to translate these scribbles into English.

Here’s what Jeffw171 said about Obama’s first 100 days in office:‘super big F.’ (The period, by the way, is mine, not Jeffw171’s. He apparently doesn’t have one.)

And Ptompkins1976 wrote, “first 100 days. Cuba..check,Iran..check, Iraq..check, N. Korea..check..larger government & more spending..check. 100 days=FAIL!” At least he/she/it found the exclamation point on his/her/its computer – if nothing else.

Baltimore Brew is a moderated site that encourages the free and open exchange of ideas in a climate of mutual respect. We reserve the right - but do not assume any obligation - to delete or withhold the publication of comments that violate our standards. Comments that are obscene, libelous or defamatory, or include vicious personal attacks will not be published. Racist remarks, sexist remarks, disgusting stuff, blatant commercial self-promotion – you get the idea – if it crosses our line, we’re not going to run it.

No, you must be joking. Are you serious?!??!

  • Mont

    OMG!

  • Jill Zarend

Amazing. Well no, maybe not. The ever increasing dumbing down of America. Another outlet has succumbed to the mediocre and narcissist tendencies of the public.

Joan, thanks for confriming this sad bit of news. We were curious whether Franz had fallen in the most recent massacre of the paper formerly known as The Baltimore Sun. It is much larger than the loss of that one Letters page editor, but the end of a public forum edited and selected to represent the many voices of the paper’s readership. I don’t even think I can clean up after my dog with what’s left…. and we are not even left with an ombudsman to hear our cry.

Ah! In the “Huffington Post” Thingamajig,
Boobytrap, Bellyache, Nicegirl and Naughty Man,
    All “Shout It Out”-
At the top of their lusty lungs,
They say, “Thank God newspapers are going..going..going..gone,
    They were biased rags anyway,
    Molded public opinion their way,
Told us what to think, how to think,
Could make ships sink in the old days,
Had too much power, now it’s people power- man!”

Licking its chops, the mob screams,
“Tear the rags to pieces, fly them as kites,
Tired of so much LIBERAL OPINION–
    Thrust down my throat,
    Long live Rush Limbaugh-
Long live the “Fox” that guards the chicken coop,
    We the loudmouths rule,
It’s our turn, we make the rules,
    Roll the guillotines in,
Chop, chop the Fourth Estate barons-
    Have outlived their usefulness,
Can get news anywhere, any place,

    In Time Square–neon lit,
    In computers, video clips,
Cell phones, telepathic bouts of consciousness,
Brain to brain hook ups and dreams,
    The NEWS streams!”

    Voices in the wilderness whisper,
    “What about the TRUTH?
    What about English-
    A language languishing-
    On the brink of extinction-
Without the period-the comma, the semi-colon,
    Without the guardians of grammar,
    There will be anarchy,
A blood bath, no meaning to the written word-
We will crumble into a molten heap.”

    From the “Tower of Babble”–
The mob waves its banners and insists–
The English language has been released,
Free at last, it bounds across its boundaries,
    Into fields of new discoveries,
    “JJ you wrong, we right,
    We in, you out,
    You soooo passe,
We mother, apple pie and latte,
Tweet, tweet!” the mob unleashes its screeds.

Joan Jacobson–this was a great article,
    Keep whispering–God save us all.

It’s so easy to be critical of The Sun these days. But what alternative is there?
    Nice post, Joan!
    (And nice reply, Usha!)

  • Franz Schneiderman

    Thanks, Joan

  • Baltimore Guy

As Joan notes, “Anonymity no longer requires scrutiny.” We’re left with choler commentary.

  • Aimee

Thanks for writing this, Joan. I’d been wondering where the letters to the editor section had gone…always one of my favorite Sun reads. It seems that there are several new news sources around town. I wonder if there is a way for them to collaborate.

Franz, Will greatly miss your friendly
voice on my answering machine and wish
you well in whatever comes next for you.
As for me, I hope I manage to somehow sublimate
my (sometimes very visceral) reactions to the daily news. Next time we meet
at the farmers mkt. if have steam coming
from my ears, you’ll know why.
    Thanks and good luck!
    Herman

Every time I got a phone call from the Letters desk at the Baltimore Sun about a letter I’d submitted, it was like getting an “A” for achieving thoughtful discourse worthy of sharing! I’m so sorry to hear that Franz Schneiderman is gone from The Sun. It’s truly a great loss and the end of an era. Best of luck, Mr. Schneiderman. Thank you for your kind editting over the years that always preserved the point of what I was trying to say. The Sun just won’t be the same without you.

    • _________________________________________________________________________ BIKING!! That’s at least the takeaway message we got from the photos that were snapped of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake this morning during Bike To Work Day. Rawlings-Blake was beaming in pretty much all the shots we got of her from Meredith Mitchell of Baltimore Bicycle Works, where the mayor and city bike czar Nate [...]
