Seems like there is an ongoing difficulty vis-a-vis environmental concerns with current steel workers and the many firms which contract with the steel company for steel products - this is a given. There have to be alternative jobs and job training for those who would lose their jobs in a shutdown or further scaling back of steel production. Americans are not good at providing for such contingencies - it usually being "fire 'em and forget 'em." The argument made by current Baltimore steelworkers about the environmental losses resulting for sending steel jobs overseas to China are pretty persuasive. However, the unions can have a major role in all of this, and help provide for the future, along with the federal government. Maryland's entire congressional delegation has got to understand that this is in the workers' best interest.

Mark - keep up the good work. This disregard for our water resources here in Maryland is real environmental stuff - where the rubber meets the road (and pollutes it) - not just a lot of consent decrees and wishful stuff, like "asking" industry to behave better. It's longstanding degradation right under our noses in our very own backyards, and affecting this precious unique resource which is Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
