Baltimore City Public Schools students recently took this national test — Trial Urban District Assessment, or TUDA — and did better than expected. Here are some examples of the multiple choice questions:

1.  4th grade:

What is 301 -  75 ?

Between 50 percent and 60 percent of Baltimore, Chicago, District of Columbia, Los Angeles, Miami-Dade, Milwaukee and Philadelphia students chose the correct answer, 226

2.  8th grade: Marty has 6 red pencils, 4 green pencils, and 5 blue pencils. If he picks out one pencil without looking, what is the probability that the pencil he picks will be green?

Between 60 and 70 percent of Baltimore students picked out the right answer, 4 out of 15. Others in the same range: Atlanta, Cleveland, the District, Miami-Dade, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and San Diego.

I’m as smart as a 4th grader but not as an 8th grader. I didn’t get probability until college and I needed to have my sister who was in the first grade at the time help me with my homework.
