Thanks Fern- Good story- and thanks for the story on the DC project.
One correction- the developer is not planning to have the residential units on MD ave face outward- like the retail, everything faces the parking lot.
Some MD ave neighbors and I were very vocal at the Saturday meeting and later at the planning commission about NOT wanting the back of this project on Maryland Avenue. The architect, Donald Kann, offered an arcade, a driveway and maybe some shop windows to “activate the street” and heard our concerns, saying,” it’s a work in progress.”
In my opinion it MUST face the street. The Back of a building is not a good neighbor.

So why bring a big box operation to Remington & wipe out an existing employer in Waverly?

Because the Ace Hardware in Waverly does not, in fact, have plywood.

Why flatten that nondescript auto-industrial area and bring in Big Box? Look up the word “hardscrabble” in the dictionary and there’s a picture of Remington. Don’t hate, I’m just telling the truth.

BTW, if Trader Joe’s could buy that “Progressive Life” building on the 2600 block of Maryland, that would be just awesome.

I have mixed feelings about this. Sure, it’s not perfect. Many of the profits will be shipped out of town and it’s nothing compared to good local ownership… but look what it’s replacing. And if we don’t have this development, what is the alternative? It’s right next to Barclay, half of which is boarded up. What viable solution would you propose?
