I just posted about it on my blog. I didn't know Miller was contesting the Steiner story. Interesting! For me, and for everyone else following it on Twitter, the news only officially broke with WBAL. Steiner's email only added to the confusion.

Anyway, shame that I didn't get a screen shot of Zurawik's post before he edited it, but he initially called Steiner's email a "remarkably clean scoop." I honestly don't know if it was my comment there or someone else's, but he later edited this sentence out of his post.

Of course, he didn't bother mentioning the editing. I guess that's what he teaches in his Media Ethics class.

The Baltimore Sun's partnership with WJZ-TV also clouds this situation. At the end of every article related to television, Zurawik should note "THE BALTIMORE SUN IS PARTNERED WITH WJZ-TV. DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS WHETHER WE HAVE AN AGENDA"

Furthermore, the point I posted on another website (DCRTV, which is how I found this website) was that regardless of the method of transmission, Steiner still was not first to say the mayor would most likely be resigning and when he did say she'd already resigned via the email blast, she actually hadn't yet, so he was wrong. And I also pointed out the close ties between Marc Steiner and David Zurawik. They both worked together at WYPR, Baltimore's NPR station, for quite some time and I believe they are friends.

David Zurawik teaches Media Ethics at Goucher College, but his coverage of the coverage of this story is ethically & factually shaky at best mainly because his Z on TV blog did not even mention any other TV or radio or internet coverage of the Mayor's resignation, only his friend Marc Steiner.
Birds of a feather? You make the call.

I would respond directly and fairly to The Sun's David Zurawik, but he has BANNED me from commenting on his blog and I have reason to believe that he has banned other criticism of his Z on TV blog regarding the Mayor's resignation and Marc Steiner as well as other stories.

By the way, I comment on many other Baltimore Sun stories and other Sun writers' blogs without any issue whatsoever. Only David Zurawik cherry picks criticism of his blogs to ensure he can win every argument and ensure he comes out looking good.

The Sun's Z on TV David Zurawik is practically in bed with Marc Steiner, they should get a room or something. Zurawik named Marc Steiner as one of Baltimore's TOP 10 Media People of 2009! And yet Steiner's on the #31 radio station in Baltimore and got fired from WYPR for low ratings, only to go to a lower rated station that barely shows up in the PPMs. If you had to name 2 things that David Zurawik writes most about, it would be Jon & Kate + 8 and Marc Steiner. What's wrong with this picture? Clearly Zurawik is wrong. WBAL's Jayne Miller has a decades long reputation that makes both of these 2 look like stooges and I don't blame her for being mad. Zurawik doesn't know anything about local Baltimore media and he clearly shows it daily. By the way, someone live on WJZ 13 credited WBAL with breaking the story to the absolute horror of poor Denise Koch. Now that was funny TV! :-)

Petty, very petty considering the gravity of the actual news event. Let's just say Perez Hilton broke the story.
