The dreaded Mother’s Day Brunch. As with Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve, it’s often overpriced and below expectations. Don’t get us wrong: brunch is an ingenious invention and you should certainly eat something this Sunday. We just think you should also do something interesting and enjoyable.

So, if you are a Baltimore Ma, tired of spending the one day you get a year in a crowded restaurant, scroll through the following Brew-list of fun, non-traditional options for your special day. (The following events all take place May 9th, unless otherwise noted).

Birthing with the Midwives at Maryland General Hospital
St. Anthony of Padua Church; 4 p.m.
“Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore is currently tied for having the lowest cesarean rate in the state.   Several midwives from the Maryland General midwifery group will be joining us to discuss birthing at Maryland General.  Bring your questions! Please bring a simple snack to share if you can (but no worries if you can’t).”

Drama Mamas: Famous (and Infamous) Moms of Stage and Screen
An die Musik; 5 p.m.-8 p.m.
“Brunch, flowers, candy, & jewelry are all great . . .  especially jewelry . . .  but this Mother’s Day, treat Mom to some music! Who wouldn’t want parental perspective from Velma von Tussle, Mama Rose, & the Duchess of Plaza-Toro? I’ll be singing great music, both silly & serious, about moms kids, & love, accompanied by the fabulous James Harp. Hope to see you – & your mom – at the show.”

All Star Mother’s Day Gospel Celebration
1st Mariner Arena; 6 p.m.
Gospel singers Fred Hammond, Shirley Caesar and Ricky Dillard and the Mighty Clouds of Joy.

Hubble 3D in IMAX
Maryland Science Center; 12:10 p.m. & 2:20 p.m.
“Experience the gripping story – full of hope, crushing disappointment, dazzling ingenuity, bravery, and triumph – in Hubble 3D, the seventh awe-inspiring film from the award-winning IMAX® Space Team.”

Moms Fly Free!
Terrapin Adventures ( Savage, MD); 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
“Treat Mom to a high flying adventure. Show you care by sharing in some outdoor thrills. Enjoy the views from our climbing tower and high ropes course as you explore all 32 different elements of our one of a kind adventure center. Purchase any 2 adventures and Mom gets to glide through the forest on our 330 ft. zip line free.”

Mother Said: A Momplicated Relationship
Germano’s Trattoria; May 8, 7:30 p.m.
“Siobhan Kolker and Elizabeth Hart draw a bead on love—mother/daughter style—with a little help from Irving Berlin, The Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, Ricky Ian Gordon, Adam Guettel and Carole King. ”

Baltimore Coffee and Tea Company: Free coffee for Moms on Mother’s Day
Baltimore Coffee & Tea Co. (Timonium); all day
On Mother’s Day, all moms get a free medium drink of their choice.

This is a great list. Even though I wrote a post singing the praises of brunch in general for mothers’ day, I’m secretly glad Mama Chop is out of town this year.

Give me 50 Sundays a year, but you can keep your Mom’s Day and Easter Brunches.

The Historic Harbor House Tour in Fells Point – a great Mothers Day adventure every Mothers Day. It’s a wonderful day day seeing the interiors and meeting the people living behind the historic facades. I’m a volunteer docent (again) this year.

The Tour is a benefit for the Preservation Society of Fells Point and Federal Hill, the group that formed around the fight to stop Fells Point from being paved over for an interstate highway in the 70′s.

11 am to 5pm tomorrow, you can work off brunch or work up an appetite for brunch.
