Thugs are attacking city bicyclists, according to a report late today in the Sun, which details the latest bike-jacking, at North Charles and 20th streets Wednesday night. Most of the incidents (this is the third in the past three months) occur on the evening commute, between 5:30 pm and 11:30 pm, the story says, quoting city bike czar Nate Evans.

Another incident — a bunch of kids who heaved rocks at a cyclist on Falls Road Tuesday, just north of the Baltimore Trolley Museum — is also described in the Sun today, in a column by Dan Rodricks.

This is actually a significant problem in the City. This also happens with scooters too. Two years ago three kids attacked me with broken off broom sticks in Canton. I sped off and they only got one hit in on my shoulder. I called the police after I got home. They said since it didn't just happen 1/2 hour prior they couldn't report it. A similar story has happened to a fellow scooter rider. Sadly, one needs to be careful when confronted with groups of urban youth.

I've seen a group of kids throwing rocks on Falls Road at cyclists (motor & non), just north of the Streetcar Museum on Tuesday eve & Thursday eve this week as well. I didn't see them do it on Tuesday, but I did see them do it on Thursday eve (both times were around 5:20 pm). I called the police shortly thereafter, but I don't know if they came to the area. A few passing cars drove right on by while one guy was getting hit but they didn't stop. If anyone else sees these kids (around age 9 or so), they should call 911 and at least report it. If the cops need an address, the Streetcar museum is at 1900 Falls Road.

Imagine if people were having rocks thrown at their cars. Imagine what the police response would be like then… the poor, poor car drivers.
