Recovered from last year’s surgery, Hopkins President Ronald Daniels returns to the “Fun Run”

Demonstrating what officials say was a full recovery from serious medical problems discovered shortly after last year’s race, Johns Hopkins President Ronald J. Daniels joined students in the school’s annual “President’s Fun Run” around the Homewood campus on Sunday.

Not long after he participated in last year’s “run” Daniels underwent surgery related to a small lump discovered in his abdomen. He had a Whipple procedure, which includes removing part of the pancreas, according to a university-wide email Daniels sent last fall.

“Beyond this issue,” wrote Daniels in that email described in the Brew last year, “I am in good health and, as those who ran with me in the President’s Fun Run at Homewood last month will (I hope!) attest, in reasonably decent shape. Both, I think, will aid in my recovery.”

Daniels recovered from what turned out to be a rare but relatively harmless “gastrointestinal stromal tumor,” according to the Johns Hopkins University Gazette.

The surgery is “an issue that’s way far back in the rear view mirror and practically out of sight at this point,” wrote Hopkins Public Affairs Director Dennis O’Shea, in an email to the Brew.

“Everyone had such a good time at last year’s fun run, which was a part of the presidential inauguration weekend, that it seemed a natural to do the event again. Ron is a dedicated runner and it’s clear from my observation that he really enjoys sharing the experience with other Johns Hopkins people who also run.”

To hear more about what’s on Daniels’ mind,  listen to a conversation he had with WYPR’s Dan Rodricks today. The relatively-new Hopkins president ( inaugurated last Fall) talked about his efforts to shift JHU’s  admission policy “so that the Class of 2014 could be chosen without regard for the candidate’s ability to pay tuition,” as YPR described the news peg for the show.

Daniels also was challenged by a caller to explain why Hopkins is worth the $20,000 more dollars it costs to go there for an MBA compared to a state school.  (Don’t know how he answered, we had to get out of the car right then!)
