Four new Baltimore City schools approved by board

One new transformation school and three new charter schools were approved for the 2011-2012 school year by the Baltimore City school board Tuesday night, continuing a trend trend under city schools CEO Andres Alonso of expanding alternative school choices.

Of the three transformation schools up for consideration, only the Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys received the support of Alonso and his staff.

Six charter schools were also evaluated. The three schools recommended by Alonso and approved by the board are Roots and Branches, Monarch Academy and existing public school Furman L. Templeton Elementary School.

Tammie Knights, of the Office of New Initiatives, presented the recommendations to the school board and outlined the evaluation process and criteria for rating the schools.

She said that several of the schools did not receive recommendations because of an incomplete proposal, unclear partnerships, or that the school did not “make a compelling argument about why it would add value to the district portfolio.”

Knights was quick to note the passion that the applicants showed throughout the process and “commended them for their participation.”

Though they did not not receive a recommendation from Alonso and his staff, the schools that failed to pass were encouraged to submit their application again in the future.

Baltimore city now has 32 approved charter schools, and 14 transformation schools.
