Sheila Dixon: dumping on Stephanie and offering an apology, sort of . . .

Former Baltimore Mayor and convicted embezzler Sheila Dixon cut loose in the pages of The Daily Record this week, making it clear — a year after she left office in disgrace — that she doesn’t think much of her successor, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (“I don’t see a clear vision”), might have a chance at being re-elected mayor after her probation is up (“of course, I would do a poll to find out”) and occasionally suffers snide remarks in public, such as the one made by a “young lady” and fellow shopper (!) in the Gallery. (“I just ignored her.”)

Is there in apology in there?

(Dixon was indicted on Jan. 9, 2009, accused of taking gift cards from developer-boyfriend Ronald Lipscomb and other developers that were supposedly intended for needy children and using them to buy personal items for herself and her children. The jury found her guilty of a misdemeanor embezzlement charge and she resigned effective Feb. 4, 2010 as part of a plea agreement.)

Maybe. Speaking about all this to The Record a year later she does say, at one point, “I disappointed the city, my family and myself.”

But, maybe not. Dixon is also still repeating the “bad boyfriend” defense that she made last year — that the bad actor in the whole drama was the married man who bought her fur coats and all those gift cards, Ron Lipscomb.

“It boils down to a relationship that I had with an individual,” she told TDR. “I didn’t do anything inappropriate as far as for being bribed or deals. If I had disclosed those gifts … but when you’re in a relationship with somebody that you don’t want anybody to know anything about …”
