Baltimore police officer and another man dead, 6 wounded in early a.m. shooting
A Baltimore city police officer and another man were shot and killed and another city police officer was among six people wounded early this morning in an incident outside a downtown nightclub, according to Baltimore police officials.
The shooting, part of a chaotic firefight with multiple shooters, occurred at about 1:15 a.m. outside the Select Lounge on North Paca Street, where police were called to break up fights, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Police have not yet identified either officer but The Sun is saying multiple sources say he was William H. Torbit Jr., 33.
The Sun also noted that one officer was in uniform and the other was not and confirmed that police are investigating a friendly-fire scenario, first reported this morning by Investigative Voice.
The Voice quotes unnamed observers at the scene saying that the officer who was killed was off-duty, working security at one of the clubs in the area, and was mistakenly shot by uniformed police.
Asked about this scenario, Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III told the Sun he had “no information on anything like that.”
The shooting is the latest violence to touch a police force struggling to function in a cash-strapped and still violent city. Three city officers were killed last fall, including one who was struck in the head with a piece of concrete during a dispute over a parking place in Canton.
Meanwhile on Friday, Baltimore police officers got a memo from City Hall informing them that their pay will be cut by nearly 2 percent over the next six months.
