That was quick. Baltimore Government Watch shutting down?
The anonymous website Baltimore Government Watch appears to be shutting down today, just days after The Baltimore Sun, citing documents first published by BGW, ran a front-page story about the city of Baltimore doing business with companies barred from operating in Maryland by the state.
“Due to pressure from city officials and contractors, we are shutting down,” they Tweeted today, shortly before announcing they are disabling their Twitter account. “If you need access to our blog or documents, email us.”
Asked via email to explain this turn of events, the emailer who has been speaking for the site, baltgovtwatch@gmail.com, wrote, “We can’t say anything more at this time. And we will not be continuing our work in any way shape or form. Others are welcome to use our materials.”
The Brew recently published an article and a Q & A with BGW, as well as BALTILEAKS, another new anonymous website which has described itself as having a similar citizen journalist-type mission. BGW has been archiving Board of Estimates agendas and BALTILEAKS has been publishing publicly-available campaign contribution information, among other kinds of documents.
