Award-winning film features tragic tale of Baltimore Crosswalk Guy

Above: Crosswalk Guy, before he takes to the streets. (A still from David Partin’s short film.)

Fells Point residents aren’t the only ones calling attention to Baltimore’s confusing crosswalk lights and dangerous intersections:

A Baltimore filmmaker last weekend took second-place at the Maryland Film Festival with a short that animates a city crosswalk icon and asks the question, “What if the little white walking-man silhouette came to life, got down off the lightpost and tried to cross a Baltimore street himself?”

Watch David Partin’s “The Crosswalk” below to find out how the little pixilated guy fares, in this blend of animation and live footage on Pratt Street at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Spoiler Alert!

He ends up as icon roadkill.

We called up Partin to see if the choice of subject was random or if he really thinks Baltimore crosswalks are confusing, as some in the city are saying now.

The Brew has been covering the complaints of city residents unhappy about the way city transportation officials recently have changed crosswalk lights, so that they only give a “walk” signal when a button is pushed. The residents say the changes favor cars over pedestrians and make streets less walkable and more dangerous.

“I totally agree with them,” Partin said. “I’m from Baltimore, I know those streets and you never know what the lights are going to do and what’s going to happen when you push the button. And those posts withthe buttons, you don’t know which light they go to.”
