Nearly 100 protesters organized by Occupy Baltimore gathered today outside a 65-year-old widow’s Union Square home to prevent the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Offfice from evicting her.
Carrying signs that said “Foreclose on banks, not people,” the protesters assembled outside the home of Lila Kara, at 1433 W. Lombard St.
Kara told the group she agreed to borrow money at a high interest rate after the bank officer told her “you can always change it later.”
But she has been unable to modify her loan and is in foreclosure, with her case pending at the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. The sheriff was scheduled to evict Kara today but held off, because of the protest.
The action was part of Occupy’s post-McKeldin Square incarnation, which includes a focus on housing issues and foreclosure.
