Flash flooding submerges parts of East Baltimore
Above: Severe flooding this evening turned East Madison Street into a river, swamping cars and trapping drivers. Behind the van is a tree blown into the street by high winds.
East Baltimore near Johns Hopkins Hospital was one of the hard-hit parts of the city during today’s sudden severe thunderstorm, with the intersection of East Madison and North Caroline streets flooded with storm water in places four feet deep.
In the photo above, looking west on Madison, a van is swamped and behind it is a tree that had fallen in the street, trapping an elderly driver, according to eyewitness Gregory Krauss.
Motorists and the Hopkins Shuttle were pulling u-turns to avoid the spot. Eventually, Baltimore City police officers rescued the trapped driver and walked him to dry ground.
Earlier, in Hopkins’ Rutland Street Garage, Krauss said he’d seen water gushing up like a geyser at the garage entrance. Likewise, water was gushing up in the middle of the intersection of Madison and Caroline streets.
It was just a fraction of the mayhem that was being reported as Baltimore caught the brunt of a fast moving line of thunderstorms, bringing with them flooding, high winds and power outages.
