Hack us some better transit, folks!

Above: Simply remaking the MTA map for Baltimore, Gerry Neily will argue at the Hackathon, will help.

So public buses aren’t on time, the various transit lines and modes don’t appear to connect, the free Circulator buses go only to affluent and tourist areas and transit here is generally perceived as the slow, dirty, dangerous mode-of-last-resort.  Our city is clogged with cars and its urban landscape brutalized by parking garages. As for the woes of pedestrians and bicycle riders, don’t get us started.

Everyone knows Baltimore has a transit problem.

So is there an app for that? A three-day event planned by Betamore this weekend, Reinvent Transit, is aimed at finding some.

Betamore, that Federal Hill-based “urban campus for technology + entrepreneurship,” in partnership with the city Department of Transportation, is bringing together technologists and creative problem-solvers from across the city.

The event starts tonight with a 6 p.m. registration at their 1111 Light St. 4th-floor office. After remarks by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, pitches start at 8 p.m. One of them will be Brew contributor Gerald Neily! (Actually Gerry is “on” at 7:15 we’re told.)

Here’s a link to their schedule (which runs through Sunday) and some of the ideas that have already been floated.
