More food distributed in Baltimore County

“A greater need among working families and seniors than ever before,” says Councilman Quirk

Citing the needs of seniors and steelworkers displaced from the closed Sparrows Point mill, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz announced today that 126,000 pounds of supplemental food has been distributed through the Maryland Food Bank to county residents.

A $75,000 supplemental appropriation was added to $325,000 already budgeted in fiscal 2014 (through June 30) to support the food bank’s efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity.

The mobile “Pantry on the Go” program has been credited with efficiently delivering food to community-based sites with the aim of “providing immediate relief to struggling families, seniors and also former steelworkers in Dundalk,” Kamenetz said.

The distribution sites supported by the additional funding include:

• Steelworkers Support Group in Dundalk
• Pleasant Zion Youth Outreach in Dundalk
• Sollers Point Multi-Purpose Center in Dundalk
• Essex United Methodist Church
• St. Stephens Living Faith in Essex
• Weinberg House in Pikesville
• Liberty Senior Center in Randallstown
• Lansdowne Senior Center
• Seven Oaks Senior Center in Nottingham
• Parkville Senior Center
• Cockeysville Senior Center
• United Churches Assistance Network in Cockeysville
• Community Crisis Center in Reisterstown
• St. Clements in Lansdowne

Greater Need Than Ever Before

“We see a greater need among working families and seniors than ever before,” said ist District Councilman Tom Quirk. “The food bank and services like it are critical.”

County residents in need of food assistance can contact the Maryland Food Bank at 410-737-8282 to be connected with a food pantry in their area.
