Water main break snarls traffic near City Hall

Intersection at Gay and Saratoga streets has been undermined; water will be shut off for repairs after 5:30

The break of a 16-inch water main on Gay Street just north of City Hall has forced the stoppage of traffic onto the northbound Jones Falls Expressway and the diversion of traffic onto Fayette Street.

The running water has undermined the street surface at Gay and Saratoga streets. In order not to disrupt area businesses and offices along Gay Street north of Water Street, the Department of Public Works has decided not to totally shut down the broken main for repairs until 5:30 p.m. today.

Customers as far north as Orleans Street on Gay Street – as well as properties on Holliday and Saratoga streets – will be affected by the loss of water tonight, DPW announced.
