One Baltimore, under snow

City residents help their police officer neighbor dig out of Winter Storm Jonas, a small kindness today that felt big

Above: Community members with Baltimore Police officer Muhib Mulla after they helped him dig out of the snow so he could get to work.

As winds this morning whipped Baltimore, and 14 inches or so of snow had fallen and bitter-cold conditions made simply stepping outside feel death-defying, city police broadcast a photo of a warm moment:

“Members of the community helped Officer Mulla dig out from the snow at his house so he could get back to work & start patrolling,” @BaltimorePolice tweeted.

The photo shows smiling neighbors standing with Officer Muhib Mulla, with the snowy street behind them.

There were lots of retweets and on Facebook, more than 1,800 more than 4,500 “likes,” with many applauding a positive moment for police-community relations – in a city where they have been especially tattered lately.

“Well, done good neighbors stay safe.”

“Auntie great job helping the police this morning.”

“Way to go!! Now that’s great community policing! Hope everyone stays safe and warm!”

“This is great. All BPD officers should be Baltimore residents.”

“Mutual respect. It’s really not that hard.”

“Muhib you rock!!! Mashallah.”

(If we get that term right, it literally means “what god has willed,” but colloquially just means “wow!”)

Police posted the photo with this comment.

“Throughout the snowstorm our officers have been on patrol responding to calls for service and helping members of the community. Early this morning we reversed roles. Community members helped Officer Mulla dig out from the overnight snow at his house so he could get to work and start patrolling again. Thanks to everyone who helped Officer Mulla this morning.”

Baltimore has been measuring backyard snowfall totals all morning, but they quickly become outdated. (#stillfallinghard)
