Severstal's Response

SEVERSTAL’S RESPONSE

Severstal spokesperson Bette Kovach issued the following response to questions by The Brew about the uncompleted or out-of-service waste recycling projects:

“Severstal North America has owned Sparrows Point since spring 2008, only a few months before start of the worst recession to affect the steel industry. Throughout our operating period, management practices have been implemented to reduce the generation of waste from our operations and efforts are underway to recycle iron waste materials previously disposed at the facility.

“Specific programs have also been initiated to evaluate potential processes to recycle and reuse residual waste materials currently generated by environmental control processes at the blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace and Humphreys Creek wastewater treatment facility. The focus of these future efforts will be to recover and reuse iron in the waste materials that will not only reduce our waste management requirements but may also lead to improvements in manufacturing costs.

“These waste minimization efforts are coordinated with requirements outlined in the Multimedia Consent Decree and are intended to fulfill applicable requirements.”
