Saturday ‘Stache Bash: hairy lips raise money for Baltimore city schools

A mustache-themed beauty pageant? It’s worth checking out — not just to treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but to aid a worthy cause.
The Baltimore chapter of Mustaches for Kids – a national volunteer-run organization that asks people to grow mustaches for children’s charities – is throwing a ‘stache-themed pageant and party on Saturday in honor of 100 “volunteer growers” in Baltimore.
These fuzzy-lipped do-gooders have been skipping their close-cut shaves in order to raise money for local students, schools, and education-related projects.
Among this year’s mustachioed volunteers are Andres Alonso, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, members of the Baltimore chapter of Teach for America, and a number of other Baltimoreans, both in and out of the city school community.
According to Mustaches for Kids, the Baltimore chapter has raised over $22,000, which will go towards funding teacher-submitted educational projects and will benefit over 10,000 students in Baltimore City. (Mustaches for Kids funds are funneled through DonorsChoose.org, an online 501©(3) that helps match the donors with specific projects).
Saturday’s celebration includes a “Sweetest Stache” competition, a “Parade of Staches,” “Mustache Poetry,” and a “Mustache Dance Off.” One grower will take the cake, and win the ultimate honor of “Baltimore’s Sweetest Stache of 2010.”
