Baltimore city councilman Carl Stokes to introduce bill to halve property taxes

Election-year proposals to cut Baltimore’s property taxes make their way onto the city council’s agenda this evening, as councilman and mayoral candidate Carl Stokes introduces a charter amendment to lower the city’s tax rate, Investigative Voice reports.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, who is running in the Sept. primary to keep her seat as mayor, has called tax-cut proposals by Stokes and others “false promises.”

Stokes’ charter amendment would force the city to lower property taxes by 15 cents annually starting in 2012 until it reaches $1.10 per $100 assessed value in 2016, compared to the $2.25 per $100 assess value that it is today, I-V reports.
