West Baltimore will celebrate its 8th Annual Boundary Block Party on Saturday, May 9, from 1-4 p.m. at Pennsylvania Avenue and Presstman Street.

Organized by the No Boundaries Coalition and Jubilee Arts, the block party will showcase the local talents of students and artists as well as create “a positive and integrated space for residents to interact and build relationships,” according to the No Boundaries Coalition website.

A resident-led advocacy group, No Boundaries seeks to build “a unified and empowered Central West Baltimore across the boundaries of race, class and neighborhoods,” director Rebecca Nagle said.

Referring to the Freddie Gray protests and last week’s riot that centered along Pennsylvania and North avenues, Nagle said, “It was in the works before the events of the past two weeks took place.” But with those events in mind, she said, “It’s a good opportunity to come together in a time of need and celebrate the strengths of the community.”

Co-organizer, Jubilee Arts, is a community program which provides art classes to residents of Sandtown-Winchester, Upton and neighboring areas.

Live performances at the block party will include African dance, a fashion show and a performance by the Brown Memorial Choir. The block party also features a resource fair where residents can register to vote and to find information on employment, fitness and more.

Fresh produce stands from the Strength to Love II Farm, the Whitelock Community Farm and the Boone Street Farm will also be present.

The organizers are calling for food donations. A list of items needed is available on the No Boundaries Coalition website.
