Billowing black smoke briefly engulfed the Jones Falls Expressway between the 28th Street and Cold Spring Lane exits today when trash underneath the highway ignited.

The 15-foot high flames that flared at about 2:45 p.m. attracted a crowd along the 3500 block of Clipper Mill Road, the local road that parallels the highway.

Bicyclists slammed on their brakes and residents from nearby Ash Street came running out of their homes to snap pictures.

“People keep using this for a dumping ground,” one man said.

“Somebody get a chair and some burgers,” said another.

The burning material appeared to mostly be old pieces of wood, though there were also couches, plastic and bags of household refuse too.

Eventually, the Baltimore Fire Department rolled up and firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was making occasional small exploding sounds.

“That’s probably bottles,” one of them said, shaking his head.
