28 Baltimore schools lacking air-conditioning closed yet again

As it did last week, City Schools closes non air-conditioned schools today, meaning students must attend classes virtually. Meal sites at these locations are also closed.

Baltimore public school buildings without functioning air conditioning are again being closed today and students told to attend classes virtually.

City Schools announced last night that 25 Baltimore schools that lack air conditioning and three schools with faulty air conditioning will not open today, June 14, and that meal sites at those locations are closed.

“This decision was made due to the combination of warm temperatures and humidity, which may cause some spaces in those buildings to feel like they are warmer,” the release said, providing a link to the Baltimore City Public Schools “Schools Without Air Conditioning” page.

Last week, after students and staff complained of suffocating-hot classrooms – in one case tweeting a photo of a classroom temperature reading of 90 degrees at 8:35 a.m.  – students were dismissed early from 30 city schools.

The next day, at least 33 schools were closed again because of air conditioning problems.

Today’s decision affects schools lacking air condition, including Baltimore City College and Benjamin Franklin High School at Masonville Cove. (See full list below)

Also closed today are three schools where air conditioning is under repair:

Liberty Elementary School, Garrett Heights Elementary School, Dallas F. Nicholas Sr. Elementary School and George Washington Elementary School.

The website also notes that City Schools “does not plan to install air-conditioning” for three schools and alternative programs – Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School, Empowerment Academy and Midtown Academy – because their buildings are not owned by the district.
