One more reason to slow the heck down, Baltimore motorists.

The city has just announced that – starting on or about January 24 – new speed cameras will be in operation at the following locations:

• 1200-1600 blocks of Cherry Hill Road – Arundel Elementary School.

• 4800-5500 blocks of Loch Raven Boulevard – Northwood Elementary School, Cardinal Shehan School.

• 3500-3900 blocks of Sinclair Lane – Sinclair Lane Elementary School, Archbishop Curley High School.

• 2700-3200 blocks of The Alameda – Baltimore City College, Abbottston Elementary School.

To use the transportation department’s lingo, these are “automated speed enforcement locations” being implemented as part of its Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System (ATVES).

The system uses speed, red-light and commercial vehicle height monitoring cameras to promote safe driving in city communities.

12 mph over posted limit

“This program is designed to increase safety by reducing driver speeds in school zones and decreasing the incidence of vehicles running red lights,” DOT said.

Portable and fixed cameras detect vehicles that exceed the posted speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour.

The cameras operate in school zones Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., throughout the year.

A speed camera violation fine is $40. No license points are assessed.

The block ranges and intersections listed are approximations, according to DOT, which notes that enforcement at all locations “may be on a temporary, rotating, or permanent basis.”
